Choosing the Right Ingredients for Sushi

Sushi continues to grow in popularity as more people discover the various options to choose from. For those planning to create sushi at home, it is important to choose the right ingredients for sushi. Take the time to choose wisely and enjoy the experience as well as the delicious results.

Rice

There is special rice that is specifically used for sushi. It is a short grain version that tends to be slightly sweet and sticky. Usually this type of rice can be found at a specialty grocery store. When it can’t be found, consider substituting Dongbei or even Calrose rice. Both tend to be similar in texture and taste.

Fish/Seafood

Individuals can choose fish that they prefer when creating sushi at home. However, just like any other ingredients, it helps to choose quality items to ensure the best taste, texture, and overall results. While grocers often have sushi grade fish available, the cost tends to be considerable. Consider playing around with various types of fish to find something that offers quality and value.

Fish isn’t the only protein commonly found in sushi. Things like shrimp, crab, lobster, and octopus can be added to a sushi roll. Once a person has tasted several sushi combinations, he or she will be able to choose favorite fish and seafood selections for future rolls.

Vegetables

No sushi roll is complete without some type of vegetable. Because of the size and shape of the rolls, veggies are often julienned or chopped into smaller pieces to create the right taste and texture. It isn’t unusual to find ginger, asparagus, carrots, and/or avocado inside a roll.

Seaweed Wrap (Nori)

While not all sushi rolls need the seaweed wrap, it can be found in a majority of rolls. Nori is the name of the seaweed and it tends to come in packs ranging from ten to fifty pieces. Because it is purchased dry, it is important to keep it away from liquids until the time comes to start making sushi.

There are lots of different sushi recipes to choose from. However, one of the best characteristics of sushi is a person’s ability to customize the roll. With a mix of fish and seafood along with vegetables, sushi rice, and Nori, the perfect sushi roll is within reach.
