The latest news from Hampton Creek is the upcoming rollout of 43 new products including salad dressings, dessert mixes, pancakes, and brownies. The first new products to hit the shelves are two salad dressings, Just Ranch and Just Italian, which are carried by Walmart, and peanut butter-flavored Just Cookie Dough, which is available in Target Superstores now and will be in all Targets by the summer of 2016. These products join Just Mayo, Just Cookies, and chocolate chip Just Cookie Dough on retail shelves.

Hampton Creek is a food company making processed foods that are free of animal products and other unhealthy ingredients, like trans fats and artificial preservatives. Their flagship product, Just Mayo, was released in 2013. It is an egg-free mayonnaise that is carried by many of the major chain grocery stores in the U.S., including Walmart, Costco, Kroger, Safeway, Whole Foods, and The Dollar Store. It is also distributed through the food service company Compass Group, which supplies schools, universities, and stadiums around the country. In 2014, the company released Just Cookies, which is only available through Compass Group, along with chocolate chip Just Cookie Dough, available only in Target.

Hampton Creek started out by making a plant-based egg substitute, which was later used in Just Mayo. Founders Joshua Balk and Josh Tetrik (the current CEO) wanted to have a positive impact on global food production by taking animal products out of the system. Animal agriculture is harmful to the environment through all the pollution it produces and is also wasteful in its use of resources. When farmers raise chickens to produce eggs, they have to use land and water to grow crops just for the animals’ food. Balk and Tetrik wanted to create familiar, everyday foods that use only plant ingredients in the hopes of making a major change in the overall food system.

Hampton Creek’s products are vegan, but they are careful not to use that word in marketing their products. Tetrik believes that most people choose the foods they buy because the foods are tasty and affordable, not because they are healthy or good for the environment. That’s why Hampton Creek foods are distributed so widely in locations like Walmart and The Dollar Store rather than in specialty markets. You can learn more about Hampton Creek products online.
